Presents from a pickpocket Would you wear my eyes? The best disguise is naked Naked on the rise The best disguise is naked Safe now to assume We can understand the weapon If we understand the wound Baby, Baby, do you feel free? Growing up in the Anthropocene Learn what you learn, feel what you feel If you steal what you love, love what you steal Mirrors on the prairie shatter A sound that breaks all thought Pain is unavoidable, suffering is not After you my lovely language Into swamps ov rhyme Beyond the limits ov control Across the circumstance ov time A Mercurial bitch is rising Twisted tongues know how to lash You represent the media I’ll represent the trash We’ll walk along the wasteland Hear the sounds, see the sights Watch a white horse being eaten By a slave on Sunday night The millennial mind is yearning For secrets kept outside I was swimming in the river On the day the country died. Baby, Baby, do you feel free? Growing up in the Anthropocene Learn what you learn, feel what you feel If you steal what you love, love what you steal Time wants a skeleton The hero wants a mask I’ll be there for you brother You only have to ask We’ll go down to the basement And dismantle the cross We need it for a fire to light our way across An ocean ov unconscious ideas in their sleep Our eyes are sown together, so we dream instead ov weep Keep clear the broken corners When crawling through a mirror If you cut yourself on accident That’s when I will appear (( D. Santamaria ))

This is the sound I’m putting my faith in Waited my whole life For this moment to begin I know all about it And here’s the truth I wouldn’t be anything Without you I’m drinking lipstick Tipping over shelves Tearing up outdated Definitions ov myself I’m here for it So let me in Waited my whole life For this moment to begin As a creature ov the crossroads I’ve learned a couple tricks In the masquerade ov trust In the marathon ov skin So all you other fools Step aside I’m finally ready The king ov fools has arrived Paradigm shift again Surfing in a swamp As the world caves in I’m walkin’ down To New Orleans Cuz she’s one place That will let me act insane It only hurts When we think it’s real And that’s the thing We got to learn if we’re to heal As a creature ov the crossroads I made an art ov being poor And I can be invisible In the middle ov a war I’m wealthy now Got what I need I’m wealthy and I’m healthy I’m happy and I’m free Paradigm shift again Surfing in a swamp As the world caves in As a creature ov the crossroads I understand the criminal mind And it’s my job to transmute it Into something divine. A Volcano 04:30
I come from the city To tangle Love Songs In your hair It really is so pretty To hear the ocean Laughing in the air I crawled out a Volcano To look into your eyes I’m a bashful earthquake Trembling between your thighs Pele brings me pleasure And a warning shot of pain I fell five hundred miles To the bottom of the rain Where I met a mermaid Who gave me a guitar With a broken piece of wood It’s magically bizarre How everything’s connected But some things more than others So break out of the sand My sisters and my brothers Truth is dark Like outer space Mama has a salt water signature When she signs her masterpiece of waves I crawled out a Volcano To look into your eyes I’m a bashful earthquake Trembling between your thighs Pele brings me pleasure And a warning shot of pain I fell five hundred miles To the bottom of the rain Where I met a mermaid Who gave me a guitar With a broken piece of wood It’s magically bizarre How everything’s connected But some things more than others So break out of the sand My sisters and my brothers I am Edith Piaff Reincarnated As a Mexican Ranchero Stitching stanzas to eternity That become severed Like the wing of a sparrow I crawled back in the volcano After looking in your eyes I’m a broken piece of mirror Shattered in the night The crows back home are lovely The swamp runs in my blood Be there for each other It’s everything I love I’m gracious when I’m hungry As below so above You heard me baby I’m crazy for your love (( D. Santamaria ))

Silence roars Down an old dirt road Skeleton trees all talk to me Grandpa’s pistol Shoots holes in my memory Grandma please sing for me Two wolves inside me Have gone to war Which one wins The one I feed Fear not tomorrow Weave a story, plant a seed Write tomorrow’s laughter With today’s catastrophe Lonesome roads Lay down your headstrong Lay down the fool card Lay down with me Lonesome roads Ain’t I your sweetheart? Ain’t I a friend? I’m just as broken as you must be Language twisting To speak it is to destroy it All the dreamers must be soldiers now Fear not tomorrow Free will equals destiny Tomorrow ain’t nuthin but an open road Lonesome roads Lay down your headstrong Lay down the fool card Lay down with me Lonesome roads Ain’t I your sweetheart? Ain’t I a friend? I’m just as broken as you must be (( D. Santamaria ))

Reaching my prime In the temple of third mind I cut the wrists In a thousand dollar suit Perfume my problems And crash into the night Every devil is a drag Every angel is terrifying Buried my breath Looking for the dawn A million miles from Death Now that she’s gone My lips, my skin, my bones Play me like I’m your piano Our love was written On a mirror in smoke But I’ve found peace at last On both sides of the mask Alone together Together in the world alone Sex, death, and other people’s money This is not a joke, that’s what makes it funny (( D. Santamaria ))
6.
Stranded between peripheries (( Mexico City Kalamazoo Michigan Babalon )) You cut the silence From my throat And called it mercy Black and white cinema Buried beneath the hyacinths Where does beauty end And art begin? My namesake surrounded Your long distance drive Through downtown Valentine Long before I ever met you (( Ghost Towns Backroads No Freeways )) Out west is where we learned To walk between the raindrops Let’s put party hats on our concussions And limp back to the birthday party Stop digging for teeth In what is only a smile There are two kinds Of people in this world And we aren’t either of them Stranded between peripheries You cut the silence From my throat (( And Called It Mercy )) (( D. Santamaria ))

Memory is a garbage bag Dangling from a tree What would I do without you To remember me The moon is in the gutter At Pauline and Burgundy There’s no telling what I could do If you gave me enough speed I’d call it freedom A deal with a demon Last night I danced with a stranger She just reminded me you were the one What would I do without you In the dark land of the sun My bedroom smells like spray paint Perfume piss and cum A talisman, a lock of hair The great work is never done My heart is bleeding Looking for meaning Fucked up and grieving What the hell do we live in I touched you once too often Now I don’t know who I am I slid my songs from between your legs And started this rock n roll band So meet me in the madness Where the pleasure is severe Because love is out of our control But I’ll be your broken mirror Let’s call it freedom Love them and leave them Love them and keep them We all remember the ones we caught We all remember the ones we caught If we kept them or not (( D. Santamaria ))

Matters of the heart I thought you knew me when You tore me apart Still I wait I count my blessings Then they blow away I loved you for the blues That you laid on me I let you into my life Like a skeleton key But you threw it all You threw it all away you see The way you made it Is the way that it will be In her bed Once it was wild and bright Now it’s dark and dead Still I wait I count my blessings Then they blow away The graveyard of our kisses Has a thousand eyes Memories, dreams, reflections All in black and white Everything about you Is coming back and haunting my life Darling, Darling, Darling, Jeckyll and Hyde Life without you I miss you lover But I normally don’t dream about you I’ll surround you Crawl back, get shot down, Move along like I’m bound to Something in your loving Was poisoning me They’d kill us baby If we’d be how we’d like to be So we threw it all We threw it all away you see The way we made it Is the way that it will be It’s not a demon Only an image of a demon we see (( D. Santamaria ))
9.
In a prerecorded universe Who made the first recording? My Love is a silent warning Her lips linger Like twin red planets Of broken pomegranates Live fast and die nine times A prerecorded rhyme From one Scorpio to another Time is a thief, Love is blind Uplift beyond destruction Barbed wire liposuction What a mind fuck That someone else wrote The language we think in Uplift beyond destruction (( D. Santamaria ))

Born in a graveyard The world is my home As long as I stick with The ramble and roam Offered dried tobacco To the trees in City Park To awaken a serpent That was sleeping in the dark She came alive inside me Electric pleasure buzz Nothing greater than God So nothing’s what it was Nothing’s greater than God So nothing’s what it was Something out of nothing Just because Joy is our greatest weapon It is what it is Put me in the world I was born for this Morning arrives Like a sad eyed model At the Mississippi River There’s this message in a bottle The message says remember Remember who you are Particles of light From an exploding star One night we wrecked like a train Our voices fell with the rain Her tiny fingertips, Pisces Iscariot Write a eulogy to a kiss I was born for this Nothing greater than God So nothing’s what it is Something out of nothing Just like……………………….. (( D. Santamaria ))

One night on the bayou For fourteen hours we drank Midnight wine Walked the dirty boulevard We both know We won’t get out unscarred Underneath the pale moonlight I dream of you in black and white Oh, Oh, Oh I know who you are And as the sun crept from its slumber I made this one request Slit my throat And sing me a lullaby I swear to you That’s how I want to die Everywhere I walk alone I look for your name On my stupid phone Oh, Oh, Oh, New Orleans is our home You go your way I’ll go your way too To the other side of the wind Beneath the origin of blue On top Mosquito Mountain Where the moon sits alone Watching empire crumble Holding a crystal and bone (( D. Santamaria ))

about

Creature ov the Crossroads is an intimate portrait of 11 songs that selected us as a guide to assist their oddyssey out of the realms of the imaginal and into the physical plane // Our shared world of sense perception // where music can be listened to and enjoyed.

Creature ov the Crossroads is folk music // Meaning music for Human-E Beings

Recorded as the muses dictated and delivered online as a guided meditation disguised as songs.

Creature ov the Crossroads is raw and imperfect in it's audio quality // We are ok with that // We have not been blessed with an audio engineer's brain

We worked hard at making a record that offers a compelling, cohesive listening experience from beginning to end.

Still, the process of making a home grown album in 2022 requires Frankensteining audio files from one tech bro alien language into another. “Mp4” to “WAV” to “MpFuck-ALL” Etc Etc.

This is done purportedly so that the songs can live and breathe comfortably on the World Wide Web.

Like wearing scuba gear into the darkest parts of the ocean, the alteration of audio files changes the way a song is able to move.

This always fucks with the way the music was originally intended.

Sometimes a guitar is unnecessarily jangly or the voice too loud // However // If the listener can roll with the imperfections and focus on the song itself // we trust they will locate a bit of value in this musical offering

Recorded in a bedroom at our family home while on sabbatical from New Orleans. The self imposed limitations of the record was that it be comprised only of our voice and guitar, with a touch of analog audio collage as a personal greeting to a beloved friend.

We wanted it to sound like listening to a naked song in an empty room.

We want only to make something beautiful. If we knew where the good songs came from, we would go there more often. We hope you find some sense of pleasure in listening to Creature ov the Crossroads.

With grace,
Dusty Santamaria
